A paper by Prof. Makoto Uchida and Prof. Katuyoshi Kakinuma of the Fuel Cell Nanomaterials Center and their coworkers, “Effect of Pt and Ionomer Distribution on Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cell Performance and Durability,” published on February 4, 2021 in the journal ACS Applied Energy Materials by The American Chemical Society, was selected to be featured on the front cover of the journal. Reducing the amount of Pt catalyst is the biggest issue in polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs), and this paper reported important findings related to the effective use of Pt on nanopore surfaces in carbon support particles, based on joint research with Panasonic and partially supported by funds for projects from the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO). This research was carried out by Aki Kobayashi (PhD student) and coresearchers and is expected to dramatically improve the durability and performance of PEFCs.
