A paper by Prof. Kenji Miyatake et al. of Clean Energy Research Center and Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Nanomaterials Center, “Effect of Radical-Mediated Cross-Linking on Partially Fluorinated Aromatic Anion Exchange Membranes and their Applications in Alkaline Water Electrolysis Cells”, published in Advanced Energy & Sustainability Research by Wiley-VCH, was selected to be featured on the back cover of the journal. In this paper, partially fluorinated aromatic polymers containing pendent ammonium head groups and styrene-based cross-linking structure were developed for anion conductive ionomer membranes. The resulting membranes exhibited high hydroxide ion conductivity, alkaline stability, and mechanical strength, suitable for electrolyte membranes in alkaline water electrolyzers. Prof. Miyatake commented that the findings are expected to contribute to next-generation water electrolysis cells and the related areas and that they will continue to endeavor.
